From August 2009 a yearly surgical skills training programme will be introduced for all core surgical trainees (CT1 and CT2) within the Severn Deanery. This programme will consist of 5 modules each consisting of  a whole days activity which will be repeated three times during the year. Attendance to one of the three dates for each module will be compulsory. The curriculum will include simulation training, team-based clinical training, and generic core surgical skills training. The programme will be repeated every year and trainees will be expected to participate both years during their Core Training. Objective structured assessment of technical skills (OSATS) will be undertaken at the final module. Modules will be run in Bristol and in Gloucester. Please see the table below for details of these five modules and follow the relevant links to obtain curriculum information and information on how to register.

From August 2009 physiology teaching sessions will be added to the existing anatomy teaching sessions run through the University of Bristol. Places will be limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. Each teaching session will be run twice to allow more flexibility for attendance. Anatomy sessions will be run on Tuesdays (late afternoon/early evening) in the Department of Anatomy, Southwell Street, Bristol.  Physiology teaching sessions will be run on Tuesday afternoons in the Department of Physiology, Bristol Medical School, University Walk, Bristol. Please watch this site for further news on the curriculum, venues, dates and means of registering your place on the teaching sessions.

REGISTRATION

To attend the sessions above trainees must register onto them using the new events registration facility located within the relevant calendar. To accomplish this trainees must have an active website account as they will need to be logged in. Once a session has been identified the trainee will simply have to look up the day in the Core Training Calendar below and select the required link. Once here the trainee will be able to click “Please register me now” and as long as there is room their name will be put onto the attendee list. If there is not enough room the trainee will automatically be put onto a reserve list. It is imperative that if a trainee will no longer be attending an event they must ensure their registration has been cancelled so the place can be offered to the next in line. For all compulsory training days (modules 1 to 5 and the Core Training Teaching Days) any trainees who are absent must fill in a non-attendance form and submit it to Simon Davis: Non-Attendance Form

It is the responsibility of all core trainees to complete a study leave application form to accompany their registration for this Severn School of Surgery training event. It is also the responsibility of the trainees to inform their Hospital Trust of their study leave. Please note this does not apply to the Anatomy teaching.
